The lakes in Las Moreras and Campotéjar: Wetlands of International Importance

The Region of Murcia has large amount of wetlands that serve as nesting and shelter for numerous birds. The biological richness of these areas makes them worthy of protection programs that would safeguard the future of these species and their habitats.
For this reason, and for meeting the criteria of the Ramsar Agreement (regarding environmental values), the lakes in Las Moreras in Mazarrón, and in Campotéjar in Molina de Segura and Lorquí have been regarded as Wetlands of International Importance based on this agreement, especially as far as the waterfowl habitats are concerned.
The Spanish Wetlands Committee coordinates the actions for the conservation of these areas. This Committee, based on the Ramsar criteria, establishes that the lakes in Las Moreras meet four of the guidelines in order to be declared Wetland of International Importance, especially as they host endangered vertebrates and endemic species of invertebrates. They are home to over 10% of the white-headed duck population of the western Mediterranean area and support 1% of the populations of the same species in the above-mentioned area.
On the other hand, the lakes in Campotéjar also meet three of the criteria of the Ramsar Agreeement that would enable the same status. In the petition, some of the details mentioned are that they are home to highly threatened bird species, host more than 10% of the white-headed duck population of the western Mediterranean area and over 10% of the total in Europe, and support more than 1% of the population of the western Mediterranean species on a regular basis.
According to the data, the white-headed duck, a a remarkable guest, has established its nesting areas in both lakes. Since 2004, surveys were also carried out to confirm the presence of over 100 species during the breeding, wintering or migration, as well as the presence of other species, national and internationally threatened, such as the marbled and the ferruginous duck.
